PGW’s Small Business Energy Check provides energy assessments and energy conservation measures to eligible commercial customers at no cost.
Our free assessments provide expert guidance and tailored recommendations to help you identify and implement energy-saving measures.

What to Expect:
- No-cost, on-site or virtual energy assessment: Our experienced energy professionals will visit your business to conduct a thorough evaluation of your energy usage.
- Simple and efficient process: Our process is quick and easy. After the assessment, you will receive a brief report outlining potential energy-saving opportunities and resources.
- Customized recommendations: We will analyze your energy bills, identify areas for improvement, and provide specific, actionable recommendations tailored to your unique needs and budget. Each energy measure will have estimates for how much it will save.
- Free installation of select upgrades: Our installation vendor will install eligible energy-saving measures at no cost to you, that could include:
- Air sealing (i.e., spray foam, weatherstripping, door sweeps, etc.).
- ENERGYSTAR® Certified Smart Thermostats.
- Installing minor insulation to areas like crawlspaces and garages, as well as insulating ducts.
- Hot water savings, such as insulating pipes, adjusting hot water heaters, and low flow faucets and showerheads.
- Updates to building controls and other energy efficiency measures.
- Ongoing support: We will be available to answer your questions and provide ongoing support throughout the entire process.
Who is Eligible?
- Small Business customers who meet the following criteria:
- The business must have a valid PGW account and be on an eligible GS Commercial rate (Class 3, 6, 9).
- The business must use natural gas for heating and/or water heating.
- The business must have annual gas usage of less than 300 mcf in the past year. Customers can view their annual usage on their most recent monthly bill, as shown below:
If you are interested in participating in the SBEC program but you are not sure whether your business meets the usage requirements, please indicate that in your email to energysense@pgworks.com, and the PGW team will confirm your usage.
- The building that the business occupies must be smaller than 50,000 square feet. If your business or building is not eligible for this program, look into how Philadelphia’s Building Energy Performance Program can identify energy efficiency opportunities.

- Schedule your screening: The Energy Assessor will contact you within three business days after PGW receives your email to schedule a convenient time to complete your screening.
- Schedule your assessment: During your screening, the Energy Assessor will determine whether your situation warrants an in-person or a virtual walkthrough assessment. The Assessor will schedule the assessment accordingly.
